Advocacy: April 2020
Our immigrant families are facing attacks on their health, economic stability, and public safety.
The national stimulus packages have left out thousands of Americans, including veterans, senior citizens, and immigrants. As a result, many immigrants in our state have no choice but to continue working, even if they or their co-workers may be at risk for COVID-19. To make matters worse, Alabama has not yet provided a language-accessible hotline for COVID-19 symptoms and testing appointments. Amidst this crisis, we’re also facing Alabama Senator Orr’s proposed SB-108 bill, which threatens local government officials who fail to comply with federal immigration enforcement.

We want the U.S. Congress to deliver a health and stimulus bill that actually works for immigrant families. Economic stimulus that excludes immigrants who are working and paying taxes leaves us all vulnerable.

We are calling on the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Governor’s Office to provide a comprehensive COVID-19 hotline accessible in multiple languages. Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, state entities are required to include free, meaningful language assistance when providing public information.

We are asking officials to publicly oppose Alabama SB-108, which threatens public safety, compromises private information, and places an undue burden on local taxpayers. Federal immigration enforcement is not the responsibility of local municipalities, and communities should not be expected to cover the costs.
We want you to lift up your voice! Contact your sheriff; police department; mayor; local, state, and national elected officials.

As an Alabaman, I'm concerned that immigrants were left out of federal relief efforts. To make matters worse, Alabama has not yet provided a language-accessible hotline for COVID-19. We’re also facing the proposed Alabama SB-108 bill, which threatens local government officials who fail to comply with federal immigration enforcement.
I’m asking you to:
